Since its founding, the Fjällräven brand, which means “Arctic Fox” in Turkish and is an endangered species, has derived its strength from the products it produces to help people spend more time in nature.
With the backpack model and frame developed by Åke Nordin in the 1950s, Fjällräven became a brand giant over the years. And after being founded in Örnsköldsvik in 1960, Fjällräven began producing innovative and functional products that have been loved by generations of nature enthusiasts around the world. These products have won many awards from industry leaders as well as nature enthusiasts, and the Swedish brand's place in the world market has been strengthened day by day.
With its identity as a premium outdoor brand that stands the test of time with its design and quality, the Greenland jacket, Kånken backpack, Vidda trousers and Expedition Down jacket have become Fjällräven classics.
The brand, which continues to improve itself, creates heirloom products while sharing moments where people can enjoy nature.
Fjällräven's mission is to leave nature to future generations in better conditions than we found it. For this reason, products are produced with longevity, durability and ergonomics that can be used for generations from beginning to end. It pays utmost attention to its ecological footprint, considering that every initiative and every innovation has an impact on the environment, people and animals. For this reason, instead of following trends, it tries to create durable and long-lasting products by using timeless designs and easily repairable materials without compromising on quality.
Fjällräven attaches importance to simple designs that are not complicated in the design phase, so that the product is recyclable and sustainable. In addition, instead of making complex designs and wasting materials during the production phase, he draws attention to using only enough materials. Another aspect of the business is that Fjällräven states that the owners of the products establish a special bond and that people use the products fondly for years, pass them on from generation to generation and take care of them like a legacy.
The brand, which strengthens its environmentally friendly image day by day with the steps it takes and the initiatives it carries out, aims to reduce carbon emissions by 25% by the end of 2020 and has rolled up its sleeves to become carbon neutral by the end of 2025.
Kånken
According to research conducted in Sweden in the late 1970s, it was determined that many children were experiencing rapidly increasing back and waist pain due to the discomfort of the backpacks of the period. Åke Nordin, the founder of Fjällräven, which stands out with the quality of its outdoor products, created a lightweight, simple, long-lasting bag with compartments that could meet the daily needs of students as a solution to the back pain problems detected as a result of the research.
Despite the passing years, Kånken has not seen any major changes in its design, but during this time, it has only increased its color variety and turned into a family with new models added to diversify its purposes of use. While doing this, it positions itself visionarily with sustainable production and consumption and tries to contribute to nature.
Fully recyclable Re-Kånken produced using less water, energy and chemicals. Each Re-Kånken model in Fjällräven’s special series is made up of 11 recycled PET bottles. The mini Re-Kånken comes to life by recycling 7 plastic bottles. Created with the Spindye technique, which saves water, chemicals and energy, Re-Kånken is produced with yarns that minimize chemical use.
Some Kånken models are donated 1% of the proceeds to the Arctic Fox initiative. The Arctic Fox Initiative is an initiative launched in 2019 to support projects that aim to protect nature and inspire people to spend time in nature, with the aim of protecting the endangered “Arctic Foxes” that bear its name.
Kånken’s “Svensk Form” design has been protected by the Swedish Society for Art and Design and is considered a part of cultural history.
The newest members of the Kånken family, the Kånken Totepack and Kånken Totepack Mini models, can be used as either a backpack or a shoulder bag for a functional travel experience. The smaller and more functional model of the Kånken Mini, the Kånken Sling, is another new member of the family. In addition to being portable, this model can be worn by hanging from the neck, as a chest pack or as a waist pack.
For those who want to carry their most valuable items in a comfortable yet cool look, the Kånken Hip Pack model, a fun yet functional waist pack, is another recent addition to the family.
