Pantone Announces the Colors of the Year for 2021

For over 20 years, the Pantone Color Institute has announced the trend color for the upcoming year each December, selecting from its extensive palette based on criteria such as psychology, sociology, and economics.

Following the calming and reassuring "Classic Blue" of 2020, Pantone has, for the first time, selected two colors for 2021: Ultimate Gray and Illuminating—a dynamic duo!

The Color of the Year typically sets the tone for trends in fashion, beauty, design, and home décor. However, in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, the combination of these two colors conveys a much stronger message. The bright and cheerful yellow symbolizes sunny days, new beginnings, and hope, while the gray represents patience and resilience.

Pantone Vice President Laurie Pressman emphasized that this year’s selection goes beyond just one color or one individual; it’s about unity and togetherness. These two independent colors coming together create a powerful and optimistic impact. Inspired by the effects of COVID-19, this color combination represents the strength of human relationships, collective effort, and the ability to stay strong without losing hope.

These powerful colors reminding us of resilience and hope are expected to dominate many aspects of our lives throughout 2021, from fashion to home décor.
