How About a Plastic-Free July?
Floating plastic bottles in the sea, straws piling up on the beach… These are some of the first images that come to mind when we think of environmental pollution. Products we use for just a few minutes pose a serious threat to our planet due to their production, composition, and their long-lasting presence in nature without decomposing. So, could recycling be the solution? Unfortunately, no. Despite the greenwashing (misleading environmental claims) that has been ongoing for years, the effectiveness of global recycling practices still remains below 9%[1]
Although we know how important recycling is, all research shows that the real issue is preventing waste generation in the first place. That's why we would like to invite you to join the #PlasticFreeJuly challenge, which will continue throughout the month of July! The Plastic Free July campaign, initiated by the Plastic Free Foundation in 2011, aims to prevent single-use packaging pollution and raise awareness. Over time, the campaign grew so much through social media that last year, 140 million people from 190 countries participated, and approximately 2.1 million tons of waste was prevented [2].
If you're wondering what to do, the only thing you need to do is choose a sustainable alternative instead of a plastic product and share it on social media with the #plastiksiztemmuz / #plasticfreejuly hashtag. If you need sustainable living products or want to invite a friend to join this movement by gifting them, here are 3 brands we recommend:
-
24Bottles
-
Less
-
SuCo
As Anne Marie Bonneau, one of the pioneers of waste-free living, once said, “We don’t need a handful of people living perfectly waste-free. We need millions of people doing it imperfectly.” [3]
Let's get started!
