Description

Published twice a year, Notebook delivers content that reminds us why cinema is so exciting and impactful. Created and printed by MUBI—a global online film collection, production company, and distributor dedicated to celebrating cinema—the magazine is an extension of its mission to broaden the reach and appreciation of the seventh art. Known for its distinctive design, Notebook features renowned writers and collaborations with filmmakers and artists, offering experimental, philosophical, and unexpected approaches to film culture. At a time when cinema-dedicated publications are dwindling, Notebook strives to capture and convey the vibrancy, depth, and beauty of cinema.

Issue 5 serves as a guide for film enthusiasts to explore and unlock their creative potential. This issue offers inspiring content on various aspects of the cinematic world:
  • Learn how to safely fall flat on your face from silent comedy legends or discover the intricacies of revitalizing an old movie theater.
  • Explore more sustainable filmmaking methods while witnessing the bold stories of stars who left fame behind.
  • Dive into John Wilson's front and back cover designs, inspired by his series How To with John Wilson.
Highlights include:
  • Genevieve Yue’s essay delving into the intersections of racism, regional history, and Hollywood filmmaking.
  • Never-before-seen illustrations by Max Douy for Alejandro Jodorowsky’s legendary but unrealized Dune adaptation.
  • A special detachable artwork by Rosa Barba.
  • Contributions by Tacita Dean and Sergei Loznitsa in the ongoing “Things a Filmmaker Should Know” series.
