vitruta's First Brand Collaboration: BluCeramics X vitruta
vitruta's first brand collaboration was with BluCeramics, and this special collection is now available at the vitruta Pera store. We had the pleasure of talking with Sinem Çelik, the founder of BluCeramics and a beloved member of Good People of vitruta, about her passion for ceramics, the story of BluCeramics, and the collaboration brought to life with vitruta.
Sinem, we’re thrilled and excited about the limited edition collection we’ve created with your ceramics brand, BluCeramics. At vitruta, we’ve been collaborating with you in the field of sustainability, and we’re familiar with your diverse career, which we’ve discussed before. Can you tell us a bit about your ceramics journey and your brand?
Ceramics entered my life seven years ago when I began taking lessons at the workshop of my dear teacher, Tülin, and first encountered clay. For a long time, we explored different materials and techniques together in her studio. The lessons were less about quickly producing items and more about calmly discovering the world of clay and glazes. Over time, my interest turned into a passion, and my curiosity into love. I set up a small studio in my home, carving out time to experiment. Eventually, I felt the desire to share this journey under a brand name, and that’s how BluCeramics was born.
What’s the process of ceramic production like? You create everything by hand, which must be quite challenging.
Yes, ceramics can be very labor-intensive, especially if you’re not using industrial methods. First, you shape the clay and ensure it dries properly. Then comes the trimming and refining stage, followed by the initial firing, where the piece stays in the kiln at nearly 1300°C for about a day. After that, there’s another round of refining, then glazing, and finally, the glazed piece goes back into the kiln.
The process is truly magical—you’re constantly amazed by what you can create with your hands. At the same time, it teaches valuable lessons, especially for those of us used to being in control. Unexpected mishaps can happen, reminding us to focus less on the outcome and more on enjoying the journey.
We don’t see your work in many places. What are your sales channels?
I actually prefer to think of it as sharing with places and people I love rather than selling. Recently, for example, I created plates for Aheste, one of my favorite spots in Istanbul. The collaboration with vitruta has also been a project I’m very excited about. Additionally, I choose to donate my earnings, using this platform to contribute in a meaningful way.
We’d love to hear more about this, especially since we’ve joined this purpose-driven system ourselves…
BluCeramics is not only a source of joy and pleasure for me and its users, but it’s also a movement for good. We operate a circular system where proceeds are donated to support women and children. Those who purchase vitruta x BluCeramics cups become part of this initiative, contributing to a meaningful cause.
Lastly, we have a few short questions for you:
